Keynote Speaker at 2006 HAW Conference Denied Tenure Andrea Smith, keynote speaker (along with historian Howard Zinn) at the Historians Against the War conference in February 2006 in Austin, Texas, has been denied tenure at the University of Michigan. At the opening plenary session of the HAW conference, Dr. Smith gave a powerful presentation on the effects of the United States war on Iraq on women. Many scholars, within HAW and without, have been extremely impressed with the quality of Dr. Smith’s publication record. And many of her colleagues and students are very upset about this tenure decision. More information on Dr. Smith’s case and on the response of her students and colleagues can be found at http://woclockdown.org/. Additionally, Professor Chris Andersen of the University of Alberta has created a petition in support of Andrea Smith's tenure case at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/mich2008/. We urge HAW members to investigate this situation and to respond appropriately. March 19, 2008 |
