HAW statement on the death of Andrew J. Bacevich

It is with great sadness that HAW has learned of the death of Lt. Andrew J. Bacevich Jr., who died on May 13 of wounds from an improvised explosive device in Iraq.

He was the son of one of the most eloquent opponents of this war, Andrew Bacevich Sr., a professor of International Relations at Boston University.  Bacevich Sr. is a conservative scholar who during the past years has challenged the underlying assumptions of U.S. foreign policy and its bent toward militarism and empire.  He has written countless articles and several key books, distinguished by their thoughtfulness and moral concern.

Professor Bacevich spoke at one of our earliest forums on the war during the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York.   Since then he has generously agreed to be a speaker for the Teach-Ins we have been encouraging across the country.  For many of us, he has been an inspiration as a committed scholar and peace advocate. To the entire family, we extend our heartfelt condolences.
