University of Montana University of Montana faculty and students will be holding a Teach In on 2 April. Our event is entitled Global Justice not Global Empire. The event will include music, theater, and speakers from the university and the Missoula community. On 2 April, 150 students and Missoulians braved drizzle and cold to attend a Teach Out held on the University of Montana's oval. The events theme: Global Justice not Global Empire. Faculty, student, and community speakers invoked Mark Twain on imperialism, queried the mainstream media's coverage of the war and suggested alternatives, and loudly decried U.S imperialism in the name of free markets and democracy while our economy and democracy are under siege here at home. City Councilman John Torma noted that 78 towns and cities, including Missoula, had rejected The Patriot Act and Patriot Act II as direct attacks on The Constitution; Community Action for Justice in the America's provided phones for the crowd to call and tell Senator Max Baucus to vote no on the Central American Free Trade Agreement; and all of the speakers urged the crowd to read documents like the 31-page National Security Doctine of the United States of America and come to their! own conclusions about what animates this administration's giddy geo-political adventures. Local media coverage was superb. Pamela Voekel |
