Brief Report: HAW Activities at the AHA Meeting, Jan. 8-11, 2004

The Historians Against the War activities at the AHA meeting a couple of weeks ago were very successful!

Our business meeting on Friday evening attracted about 50 people; we had a lively discussion about possible directions for HAW, ratified the proposed organizational structure, and selected a new steering committee. The steering committee has begun e-mail and phone communications and is meeting on January 31 in NYC. We will distribute a report from the new SC within a couple of weeks

The HAW resolution on civil rights and academic freedom was unanimously passed at the AHA business meeting on Saturday, January 10. The AHA Board has since affirmed the HAW resolution so it now represents the official stance of the AHA.

Roundtable
HAW roundtable "Imperial Crisis and Domestic Dissent," with Andor Skotnes chairing.

The HAW roundtable "Imperial Crisis and Domestic Dissent," featuring Carolyn Eisenberg, Irene Gendzier, and Staughton Lynd packed the room. The presentations were very well received and an excellent discussion - both historically and politically rich - followed.

Unfortunately, the Peace History Society reception, co-sponsored by HAW, was scheduled at the same time as the AHA Business Meeting, and a number of HAW activists were unable to attend the reception. The reception was, though, a success, and both PHS and HAW hope to work together in the future.

Finally, we distributed hundreds of copies of HAW's first pamphlet, "Brief Bibliography of English Language Sources and Studies on the Middle East and Muslim South Asia," by Stuart Schaar and Marvin Gettleman. And we distributed hundreds of copies of latest Radical Historians Newsletter published in support of HAW (electronic copy at http://chnm.gmu.edu/rhr/rhn/no88/).

NOTE: We have many copies of the Radical Historians Newsletter left, and we would love to send you a bundle of twenty or more for you to distribute to your colleagues. Send a request for Newsletters to van.gosse@fandm.edu, and we will send them to you free.

Solidarity,
Andor Skotnes
